Buy Now, Pay Later: But It's Still Paying Years Later

Buy now, pay later (BNPL) feels like a cheat code. Split a $120 pair of shoes into four $30 payments? Easy.

Buy now, pay later (BNPL) feels like a cheat code. Split a $120 pair of shoes into four $30 payments? Easy.

But the math only works if everything goes perfectly—and for most teens, it rarely does.

Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm, and Sezzle have exploded in popularity because they're frictionless. One tap at checkout and you're done. No credit check (usually). No interest (sometimes). No waiting.

That's exactly the problem.

The Problem

It's Not a Purchase—It's a Loan

Every BNPL plan is debt.

You can have multiple "Pay in 4" plans across different apps at the same time, and those small payments can quietly stack up to more than you can actually afford. What looks like $30 every two weeks is really a $120 commitment you've already made—before your next paycheque arrives.

It's Only "Free" If Every Payment Arrives on Time

Miss one due date, and late fees can kick in immediately.

That "free" $50 purchase split into installments can end up costing $65 or more before you've even opened the app again. The "no interest" promise assumes you'll never miss a payment.

You're human. Eventually, you'll forget.

Auto-Withdrawals Don't Care About Your Balance

Payments come out on a fixed schedule, whether the money is there or not.

If your account balance is too low, your bank may charge overdraft or NSF fees on top of any fees imposed by the BNPL provider. In some cases, one missed payment can trigger charges from both the app and your bank.

It Can Damage Your Credit Before You Even Have a Credit Card

Many BNPL providers now report payment activity to credit bureaus.

A single missed payment can leave a mark on your credit history—the same record lenders, landlords, and phone providers may review when you apply for an apartment, car loan, or mobile plan. You could begin adult life already playing catch-up.

Refunds Don't Always Stop the Payments

Return an item, and the refund process can take weeks.

Meanwhile, your installment payments may continue to be withdrawn while the return is being processed. You could end up paying for something you've already mailed back and then waiting to be reimbursed. During that time, your money sits in limbo.

It Trains Instant Gratification—And That's the Biggest Risk

BNPL removes the gap between wanting something and owning it.

That pause—the patience to save, wait, and buy something when you can truly afford it—is the habit that builds long-term wealth. Every time you skip that step, you're reinforcing a money mindset that can cost you for decades.

So, What Should You Do Instead?

You don't have to swear off BNPL forever. But you do need to understand what you're signing up for and build habits that keep you in control.

Build and use your sinking funds

Better yet, try using a sinking fund. Set aside a small amount each week toward something you want and buy it outright once you've saved enough. No fees. No risk. No stress.

Think through your purchase

Before splitting a purchase into installments, map out the full payment schedule. Ask yourself: Is it genuinely affordable, or does it only feel affordable because the number looks smaller?

If you do, treat it like a bill

If you choose to use BNPL, treat every payment like a bill:

Set calendar reminders or payment alerts.

Avoid having more than one BNPL plan at a time.

Never use BNPL for items you think you might return.

These companies are billion-dollar businesses built around consumers who don't read the fine print. Understanding that and act on it.

The pause between wanting something and buying it isn't a barrier to enjoying your money. It's the skill that lets you enjoy it on your own terms—without owing anyone.

How to land a summer job (Part 3 of 3)

Part 3 of 3 in the Summer Job Series - If you can't find a job — create one

Part 3 of 3 in the Summer Job Series - If you can't find a job — create one

You applied. You followed up. Nothing yet. That happens — and it doesn't mean you're stuck. If a traditional job isn't coming through, you have two options: keep looking, or stop waiting and build something yourself. This post covers both.

You don't need permission, a resume, or a manager to start earning. You need one skill, one willing customer, and the nerve to ask. Most teens already have all three.

Service

Earn

Lawn mowing & yard work

$20–$50 per yard

Babysitting

$15–$25/hr

Pet sitting & dog walking

$15–$30 per walk

Car washing

$20–$40 per car

Social media help for local businesses

$50–$150 per project

Tutoring

$15–$25/hr

How to get started:

Choose one service — Pick something you can do well and would actually enjoy. Narrow focus beats doing everything.

Set a fair price — Search what others in your area charge. Start competitive — you can raise rates once you have reviews.

Tell 10 people — Friends, family, neighbours. Word of mouth is still the most effective marketing a teen has. One great job becomes five referrals.

Do great work — Reliable teens get repeat customers and referrals. Your reputation is your marketing.

Track your income — Keep a simple log of what you earn. You may need to report it — and it's a great habit to start now.

Ontario Summer Company: If you're thinking bigger, Ontario Summer Company offers mentorship and up to $3,000 in grant funding for teens who start a summer business. Applications typically close in May — apply early next year. ontario.ca/page/start-summer-company-students

Your 5-day Summer Job Challenge

Whether you're still looking for a traditional job or building your own, this challenge gets you moving. One focused action per day — by Day 5 you'll have more momentum than most teens manage all summer.

Day 1 — Make your list. Write down 3 jobs you'd actually enjoy doing. Be honest — motivation matters.

Day 2 — Do your research. Look up each one. Find real openings, locations, hours, and how to apply.

Day 3 — Build your resume. One page. Clean font. Honest bullets. Use the format from Part 2 of this series.

Day 4 — Apply to at least 3 places. Customize one sentence in each application.

Day 5 — Tell someone your plan. Accountability matters. Tell a parent, sibling, or friend what you're going for. Saying it out loud makes it real.

Bonus challenge: If you land an interview within 2 weeks, email us at hello@teenfinanceclub.com — we'd love to hear about it.

Free resources

Everything you need to land your first summer job — all free:

Summer Job Checklist

Teen resume Template

Interview Prep Worksheet

Earnings & Budget Tracker

Action for the week

Start Day 1 of the challenge today — write down 3 jobs you'd actually enjoy.

If nothing has come through yet, pick one service from the list above and tell 10 people this week.

Download the free toolkit and use at least one resource before you apply again.

This is general information only, not financial advice.

Share this with someone who needs it

Know a teen or parent who’d love this? Forward it to them. They can subscribe at: teenfinanceclub.com/subscribe

Ready to put this into practice?

Our events are built for teens — hands-on sessions where you take what you’ve learned and actually do something with it. See what’s coming up: See upcoming TFC sessions for teens

How to land a summer job (Part 2 of 3)

Part 2 of 3 in the Summer Job Series - How to Get the Job: Résumés, Applications, and the Interview

Part 2 of 3 in the Summer Job Series - How to Get the Job: Résumés, Applications, and the Interview

You found the jobs. Now here's how to actually land one.

Most job offers don't go to the first applicant. They go to the third or fourth — because the first person rarely follows up. The teens who get called back do three things differently: they write a résumé that works with no experience, they apply with intention, and they show up to the interview prepared. Here's how to do all three.

Step 1 — Build a simple résumé

No experience? No problem. A first résumé doesn't need work history. It needs to show you're a real person who shows up and gets things done.

What to include:

Your name, contact info, and school

Volunteer work — even informal (helping at a community event, walking a neighbour's dog)

Clubs, sports, or extracurriculars that show reliability or teamwork

Awards or recognition — academic, athletic, or otherwise

Skills: communication, teamwork, time management, problem-solving

Keep it to one page. Use a clean, readable font and leave white space — a crowded résumé is harder to read than a short one. When in doubt, cut rather than cram.

Every bullet should answer one question: does this show I'm reliable, a team player, or capable of learning something new? If yes — keep it. If not — cut it.

A strong bullet looks like this: "Collaborated with classmates to plan and run a school fundraiser, coordinating tasks and meeting a tight deadline."

Step 2 — Apply smart, not wide

Five focused applications beat fifty generic ones every time.

Pick five jobs you'd actually show up for. Employers can tell when you wouldn't. Then customize each application — one sentence is enough. Mention the company by name and say why you're interested in that specific role. It takes two minutes and sets you apart from most applicants.

After five to seven days, follow up. Most applicants never do. A polite follow-up shows initiative — exactly what employers want to see in a first-time worker. Keep it simple: "Hi, I recently applied for the summer position and wanted to follow up. I'm still very interested in the role and would be happy to provide any additional information."

Step 3 — Prepare for the interview

You don't need to sound perfect. You need to sound prepared.

Before every interview, spend ten minutes looking up the company. Know what they do, who their customers are, and one reason you'd be a good fit. That alone puts you ahead of most first-time applicants. And arrive five minutes early — being late ends the interview before it begins.

Practise these questions out loud before you go:

Tell me about yourself.

Why do you want this job?

What are your strengths?

When are you available to work?

Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.

For "tell me about yourself," here's a strong starting point: "I'm reliable, eager to learn, and I enjoy working with people. I may not have formal work experience yet, but I take direction well, I show up on time, and I'm ready to contribute from day one."

One more thing on body language: make eye contact, sit up straight, and put your phone away before you walk in. These things are noticed immediately — and they signal whether you take the opportunity seriously.

Your action items this week

Practise answering "Tell me about yourself" out loud. Aim for 60 seconds.

Write or update your résumé. Keep it to one page.

Pick your five target jobs and write one customized sentence for each application.

This is general information only, not financial advice.

Up next — Part 3 of 3: What to do if you can't find a job, and the Summer Job Challenge.

Share this with someone who needs it

Part 1 of 3 in the Summer Job Series - Earn your first paycheck, build real-world skills, and gain experience that actually matters.

Part 1 of 3 in the Summer Job Series - Earn your first paycheck, build real-world skills, and gain experience that actually matters.

A summer job can do a lot more than just make you money.

At $17/hour, working 15 hours a week for 12 weeks adds up to more than $3,000 before tax. That could help pay for travel, save for a car, or even start investing. And the best part? You don’t need a perfect résumé to get started. Everyone has a first job.

Choose the right type of job

The best first job is usually the one you’ll actually apply for. Start with jobs that fit your personality, schedule, and comfort level.

Job type

Best for

Key benefits

Retail

Students who enjoy talking to people

Flexible hours, customer service experience

Food service

Fast-paced workers

Teamwork and communication skills

Summer camps

Leadership-oriented students

Leadership experience, fun environment

Babysitting & pet sitting

Flexible side income

Independence, responsibility

Tutoring

Strong students academically

Higher pay, flexible schedule

Lifeguarding

Active students

Higher hourly pay, responsibility

Retail jobs (age 15+)

Retail jobs help build communication skills and confidence. Most stores train new employees, so experience usually isn’t required.

Why it’s good

Flexible hours

Easy entry point

Strong customer service experience

Food service jobs (age 15+)

Restaurants and cafés teach teamwork, speed, and responsibility under pressure.

Why it’s good

Lots of openings

Fast-paced environment

Great teamwork experience

Summer camps (age 15+)

Camp jobs are perfect for students who enjoy leadership, sports, or working with kids.

Why it’s good

Leadership experience

Fun environment

Often includes meals or perks

Babysitting & pet sitting

Flexible and easy to start with no formal experience.

Tutoring

If you’re strong in a subject, tutoring can pay well while letting you create your own schedule. Typical pay: $15–$30/hour

Lifeguarding (age 15+)

Lifeguarding usually pays better than many other teen jobs once certified.

Government programs most teens miss

Many students only look on Instagram or ask friends for jobs. But some of the best opportunities are government-sponsored programs that most teens never hear about.

Program

What it offers

Canada Summer Jobs

Paid jobs at nonprofits and small businesses across Canada

FSWEP

Federal government student jobs and internships

Ontario Summer Jobs

Ontario-based jobs with public sector employers

Ontario Summer Company

Funding for student-run businesses

Important: Many of these applications open in February or March and fill quickly.

Where to find real job postings

Platform

Best for

Job Bank Canada

Government and youth job listings

Indeed Canada

Part-time and local summer jobs

LinkedIn

Internships and professional experience

Search terms to use

“teen summer jobs near me”

“part-time summer jobs”

“summer student jobs”

Final advice

Choose a job that gives you more than just money. The best summer jobs help you build:

Communication skills

Leadership experience

Confidence

Time management

Professional experience

You don’t need experience to get started. You just need to apply.

Your action plan this week

Step

Action

1

Pick 3 jobs that fit your interests and schedule

2

Find one real posting for each

3

Submit all 3 applications before the weekend

The hardest part is usually applying for the first one.

Once you do, it gets easier.

This is general information only, not financial advice.
